Humane Justice: new book explores role of kindness in criminal justice

A new book funded by the Monument Trust and compiled by Khulisa explores the role of kindness in the criminal justice system and is now available to order and read online.

Humane Justice – What role do kindness, hope and compassion play in the criminal justice system? is a collection of essays and creative responses to this critical question. With creative, disruptive and innovative contributions from practitioners, people with lived experience, and policy makers, each contribution in this book touches on the transformative, and often life-saving, impact of kindness, hope and compassion on the lives of those with experience of the criminal justice system.

Among the book’s contributors are poet Mr Gee and Brenda Birungi, poet and host of the 2020 Anne Peaker lecture.

Humane Justice is the fourth in a series of books curated by the Monument Fellowship: eight organisations which were funded by The Monument Trust to work together to make a sustained, cumulative and transformative change to the journey of individuals through our justice system. The members of the fellowship are the Centre for Justice Innovation, Clinks, the Diagrama Foundation UK, Khulisa UK, the Koestler Trust, Lemos and Crane: The Good Prison, the National Criminal Justice Arts Alliance and Restorative Solutions CIC.
