Beating Time joins One Day One Choir

Beating Time’s singing group at HMP Maidstone, The Maidstone Jammers, was delighted to take part in this year’s One Day One Choir initiative – a global choral project in support of the UN World Peace Day, 21st September.

The programme included a special song of peace and reconciliation, “Closer”, written by one of the group as part of his healing process. Speakers at the event included Jane Hanson, Director of One Day One Choir; the Governor of HMP Maidstone, Dave Atkinson and Beating Time’s co-founder, Heather Phillips.

Beating Time works in 5 prisons currently. Its purpose is to make the experience of prison more productive and positive for prisoners, their families, staff and society as a whole and to develop more opportunity for people who have served a prison sentence by being creative and enterprising. They use a combination of group singing, performance and entrepreneurship for the personal development of prisoners; to maintain family relationships; build relationships with employers and help people in custody make a workable plan for the future.
