Shakespeare on screen in prisons symposium

31st March 2020
10am – 5pm (registration 9.30am)
York St John University
Free

The symposium will explore the potential for new and innovative creative partnerships within the arts, higher education and the criminal justice system.

The day will open with an exploration of the six-year partnership and Shakespeare Trilogy between York St John University, HMP New Hall and the Donmar Warehouse. The partnership resulted in a digital and artist-led participatory drama project and pedagogy, co-created with and by women in prison, artists, academics and students.

The whole mission was to represent the voiceless who felt they had no stake in our culture. The project has witnessed first-hand the transformational power of women’s creative engagement with the Trilogy films in prison.
Phyllida Lloyd, Director

Delegates from across the prison service, academia and the arts sector will have the chance to experience a day of workshops, talks and film screenings. Darren Henley, CEO of Arts Council England, will be in attendance. Lunch and refreshments will be provided.
