SUMMARY:The Trial
DESCRIPTION:26th July – 26th August 2019\, Spike Island\, Cork\n29th August – 12th September 2019\, Lifford Courthouse\, Donegal\n26th September – 3rd November 2019\, Dublin Castle\, Dublin \nThe Trial is a visual art installation on healthcare and human rights in the Irish criminal justice system\, created by Sinead McCann and made in collaboration with men from the Bridge Project Dublin who have lived prison experiences. \nThe project accompanies research by University College Dublin historians\, Catherine Cox and Fiachra Byrne for the project ‘Prisoners\, Medical Care and Entitlement to Health in England and Ireland\, 1850-2000’. \nOn multiple screens\, three characters – Tommy\, Charlie\, Neili – tell the real life stories of those who have been held or worked in Irish penal institutions during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. \nThe Trial is produced in collaboration with Theatre of the Oppressed specialist Sarah Meaney\, and Mary Caffrey and Dan Monk of Sixbetween video production company. \nFind out more and book \n\nImage courtesy of Sinead McCann & Sixbetween

SUMMARY:I am the Coyote
DESCRIPTION:28th August 2019 – 12th January 2020\nUniversity of Hull\nFree \nNovus\, the University of Hull and HMP Humber have collaborated on an exhibition titled I am the Coyote\, which aims to show the power of art as a rehabilitation tool in prisons over 45 years. \nI am the Coyote includes art produced from the Special Unit 74 and HMP Humber’s GRAFT Studio\, the largest art college in the UK prison sector and a unique space where prisoners are able to focus on creativity and its benefits. Colour photographs document the group thinking and creative process as well as the experiential teaching strategies. \nThe exhibition has been commissioned as part of the University’s Culture Campus initiative and is on show at the Brynmor Jones Library. \nOur vision is to wholeheartedly embrace provocative topics and encourage discussion and debate across our campus. DESCRIPTION:19th September – 3rd November 2019\nSouthbank Centre\, London\nFREE \nOpening festival: 18th September \nKoestler Arts‘ exhibition of art entered in to its annual awards continues this year at London’s Southbank Centre. \nThe award-winning saxophonist and MC Soweto Kinch will be curating the exhibition\, following the footsteps of Antony Gormley and Benjamin Zephaniah. Soweto’s themes range from slavery and emancipation to sacred geometry. \nOver 150 artworks will be on display\, from music and poetry to paintings\, drawings and sculpture. \nTitled Another Me\, the exhibition invites visitors to reassess their perceptions of people who have spent time inside. \nFind out more here \n\nThe Koestler Arts is the UK’s best-known prison arts charity. DESCRIPTION:28th October – 3rd November 2019\nTate Liverpool\nFree \nCreative art pieces produced by men from five prisons across the North West and North Wales will be presented in Tate Exchange at Tate Liverpool. \nMen taking part in the Novus Family Learning programmes have worked with artist Denise Wright to explore artistic techniques and processes\, taking inspiration from the Keith Haring exhibition at Tate Liverpool. \nSustaining strong family relationships while in prison can play an important role in rehabilitation. The aim of the project is to reduce the impact of separation and isolation that families often face. \nThe project is presented by social enterprise\, Novus\, who deliver education\, training and employment opportunities to men\, women and young people in over 50 UK prisons. This is the third project that has been displayed at Tate Exchange as part of an ongoing partnership between Novus and Tate Liverpool. \nTate Exchange\, now in its third year at Tate Liverpool\, explores how art makes a difference in society. It is an open experiment and ongoing programme of residencies and events developed by artists\, practitioners\, and Associates\, both within and beyond the arts sector. DESCRIPTION:Three days in early November 2019 (dates tbc)\nManchester\n£150 (free places may be available for those unable to pay) \nOdd Arts is offering an opportunity to train with Geo Britto\, one of the first generations of students who trained with Augusto Boal in Brazil. SUMMARY:Dance Club at Scrubs
DESCRIPTION:7th November – 10th November 2019\nDeptford Does Art Gallery\, London\nFree \nDance Club at Scrubs is an exhibition celebrating the first edition of Dance Club\, a dance and choreography course run at HMP Wormwood Scrubs. \n\nSupported by Arts Council England and Barnet\, Enfield & Haringey NHS Mental Health Trust\, Dance Club endeavours to create a space for men in prison to improve communication skills\, express themselves creatively and challenge negative masculine behaviours prevalent in prisons. Over eight weeks Helena Webb and co-facilitator Marc Stevenson have danced with a group of men at Wormwood Scrubs accessing the mental health provision there. The group have danced energetically\, calmly\, sensitively and with abandon. They have recorded their dances through drawn scores and audio descriptions. \nThe work from Dance Club is exhibited alongside pieces by artist and National Criminal Justice Arts Alliance steering group member Erika Flowers\, who has lived experience of the criminal justice system. \nOn 10th November Erika will join other specialists in discussion on prison\, masculinity and dance as a rehabilitation tool. \n\n\nFind out more and book here\n\nImage courtesy of Helena Webb

DESCRIPTION:Monday 11th November 2019\nManchester\nFrom £75 \n\nBook here\n\nExcellent session\, energising\, thought provoking and informative\nCourse participant \nThis one day introductory course will explore some of the questions to consider before embarking on artistic and creative work in prisons. Participants will be taken through the process of delivering sustainable creative activities in prisons\, from idea formation though to evaluation. The course will also provide an overview of the current criminal justice system and an insight to working inside a prison\, looking at the practical considerations. \nThe course will be delivered by Rebbecca Hemmings (Development Officer for the National Criminal Justice Arts Alliance) and Sara Lee (Director of Music in Prisons). It has been adapted from the Clinks Working and Volunteering in Prison training course and provides space for questions and discussion. \nThe course is aimed at those with an arts background\, but with little or no previous experience of working in a criminal justice settings. Please note this course is not a qualification and will not provide a certificate to work in prisons. \n\nWe are offering two free places to individuals with lived experience of the criminal justice system and/or of black\, Asian and minority ethnic communities. SUMMARY:Arts in criminal justice media training - with the Prison Radio Association
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday 27th November 2019\nBirmingham\nFrom £75 \nA one-day training course on how to positively navigate conversations with the media about work in arts and the criminal justice system. \nThis course aims to support and prepare our network so that they can appropriately deal with media enquiries and promote their work with confidence and expertise\, across media and social media platforms. \nThe Prison Radio Association is a prison-based charity that produces and delivers National Prison Radio (which airs in more than 100 prisons). It also runs PRA Productions – an independent production company whose profits support the charity. \nPRA Productions has produced dozens of programmes for the BBC. Some focus on criminal justice\, others stretch way beyond this niche. The success of PRA Productions was recognised by the industry when it was named Independent Production Company of the Year at the 2017 Audio Production Awards. Government departments and charities including the National Literacy Trust\, Booker Prize Foundation\, Samaritans\, National Careers Service and Prison Reform Trust\, are some of its clients. \nThe training includes information\, exercises and discussions on: \n\nHow the media works\nWhat journalists want\nMaking media contacts\nInterviews types – good and bad practice\nPreparation for interviews\nHaving a social media presence\nMock media interviews with feedback.\n\nThis course will be delivered by three members of the Prison Radio Association (PRA): Phil Maguire OBE – the founding Chief Executive of the PRA\, Andrew Wilkie – the PRA’s Director of Radio and Jo Meek who is the PRA’s Digital Director. \nTea and coffee\, and lunch will be provided.  Spaces are very limited and are offered on a first come\, first served basis.
