SUMMARY:‘Plants\, Prisons and Potential’ with Faye Claridge
DESCRIPTION:Join the Prisoner Learning Alliance (PLA) for an online conversation about gardening for wellbeing in prisons with Artist Faye Claridge who works at the intersection of prisons\, ecology\, archives\, and heritage. In 2021\, Faye took Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) archive material into HMP Send\, a women’s prison in Surrey. The collection documents how prisoners of war set up a horticultural society in Ruhleben internment camp in Germany during WW1. Its letters and photographs show the enormous impact that gardening had on their mental health and wellbeing. Faye’s project with the RHS – Plants\, Prisons and Potential – draws on these materials to encourage women in prison to consider the role of gardening in their own wellbeing.  \nDuring this webinar\, participants will learn more about Plants\, Prisons and Potential at HMP Send\, and about the programme it has since inspired at HMP Hewell\, supported by Novus. You’ll also consider the benefits of the arts and horticulture in prisons and consider how prison teachers of other subjects could harness them in their lessons. The webinar will begin with the screening of a short film\, co-produced by Faye and learners. This will be followed by a chaired conversation\, and then questions and comments from the audience.  \nRegister online

SUMMARY:Clinks: Doing our stories justice
DESCRIPTION:Stories are powerful\, and stories from lived experience can be particularly effective in shining a light on why things need to change. \nBut how can we make sure stories are being heard and understood? How can we make sure our stories aren’t just resonating with our audiences\, but are also helping to change hearts and minds?   \nIn this interactive workshop\, we’ll explore how framing can play a part in how we tell stories of lived experience – whether you want to learn more about framing your own story\, or you want to better support other people to tell theirs. \nWe’ll look at ideas such as the role of context and telling a wider systemic story\, and practical tips which can be applied in a range of communications and situations to make sure we’re doing our stories justice. \nThe session will draw insights from FrameWorks UK’s latest work focused on criminal justice\, and from their research in other areas such as poverty and homelessness. \n  \nFind out more and register via the Clinks website.

SUMMARY:Clinks annual conference and AGM 2022
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday 22 November 2022\, 09:30 – 18:00 | Drapers’ Hall\, Throgmorton Street\, London\, EC2N 2AN\nWhat next? Building strength and unity in a changing criminal justice system\nRecovery from the pandemic and major changes to the criminal justice operating environment\, including probation unification and proposed prison reforms\, present significant challenges\, as well as some opportunities\, to voluntary organisations and the people they support. Through these changes the voluntary sector’s strength\, determination and flexibility enables organisations to prioritise people in contact with the criminal justice system and their families. \nOur State of the Sector research has shown that these changes have come on top of\, not instead of\, wider challenges that have long faced the sector. At this year’s conference\, we aim to strengthen the voluntary sector’s ability to succeed together amidst an ever-changing environment. Alongside hearing from our keynote speaker; Phil Copple\, Director General of Operations for Prisons and Probation\, we will be running panel discussions and workshops showcasing best practice and the sharing of ideas and recommendations from some of our member organisations. \nOur panel discussions will delve into how voluntary sector organisations can look to diversify their funding opportunities within the criminal justice system\, as well as how we can all prioritise wellbeing for staff and explore ways in which we can ensure our workforce feels valued when salary increases are not always possible\, and the retention of skilled and talented staff remains a concern. During our workshops we will be looking at the importance of our workforces being diverse and representative of those who access services and the challenges that are faced in doing this within the voluntary criminal justice sector. We will also be exploring the concept of Framing; and how the sector can be a united voice and be more than the sum of its parts. Further details on these panel discussions and workshops and how to sign up to them will be shared soon\, and if you are interested in being involved and sharing your experiences of these topics at the conference then please do get in touch at events@clinks.org. \nThe conference will be followed by our AGM and a drinks reception. In addition to allowing us to carry out business that is vital to the running of Clinks\, our AGM is the place for members to exercise the right to elect our trustees\, and a chance to discuss the issues that matter to you as a member. \nOur early bird tickets are now on sale and are available until 20 October\, so please do book yourself a space by clicking the  ‘Book now’ tab – we look forward to seeing you at Drapers’ Hall! \nMore information including how to book is available via the Clinks website

SUMMARY:10 YEARS OF SOUNDING OUT AND MAKING TRACKS
DESCRIPTION:The Irene Taylor Trust has been inspiring people through its ‘Music in Prisons’ projects since 1995; in 2012 it extended this work ‘through-the-gate’ into the community with the ‘Sounding Out’ programme for former prisoner musicians\, and ‘Making Tracks’\, an initiative for young people experiencing challenging circumstances. \nThe resulting original music gives a unique insight into the lives of people who are often marginalised and undervalued; they have important stories to tell\, experiences and talent that audiences need to hear and see. \nTickets cost £5 and are available online. \nCan’t make it in person? This event will be packed full of insightful sessions relating to the conference theme of What does building back better look like for the arts in criminal justice? \n\n\n\nThe last two years have been difficult for those working in the arts in criminal justice. But this hard time has also highlighted the extraordinary adaptability of creative individuals and organisations who have continued to support and inspire people in the criminal justice system\, while responding to the pandemic and far reaching changes in criminal justice policy. \nAs we emerge from the pandemic and arts organisations move from survival to recovery mode\, there is a critical need to learn from our experiences and share successful approaches to the ‘new normal’ that 2022 and beyond will bring. \nWith a day of keynote speakers\, panel discussions and workshops\, the National Criminal Justice Arts Alliance (NCJAA) welcomes everyone to attend and learn about how we can all best move forward together. \n  \nConference Agenda \nNCJAA Co-Chairs Anna Herrmann\, (Clean Break)\, and Simon Ruding\, (TiPP)\, will give an opening address before keynote speeches from Esther Thompson (One Small Thing) and Jennifer Walmsley (BearFace Theatre) on the importance of organisations embedding trauma-informed practices in their ways of working. \nA panel discussion will focus on what building back better looks like from a range of different settings. Ralph Lubkowski\, (Governor of HMP Hewell)\, will share his views on what best practice for arts provisions could be within prisons and Erika Flowers (Koestler award winning artist)\, will discuss fairer employment opportunities for freelancers with lived experience and independent artists working in the criminal justice system \nAttendees are invited to join afternoon workshops facilitated by specialists who have developed better ways of working during the pandemic. This year\, workshops will be led by In Focus Education and Development\, Odd Arts\, It’s Not Your Birthday But…\, and Niki Gibbs. \n  \nWorkshops \nThere are four workshops being delivered at our conference\, with attendees able to select which two they would like to participate in when registering for the event: \nWorkshop 1: Online Delivery of the Bronze Arts Awards \nXavier Fiddes (In Focus Education and Development) will discuss how his creative organisation used technology to successfully deliver services during the pandemic; and how it can be used to support creative discovery with groups such as young people in the criminal justice system. \nWorkshop 2: Bringing Arts in Criminal Justice to a Wider Public Audience \nNiki Gibbs (artist and NCJAA member) will explore ways we can bring arts within criminal justice into the public domain\, using the Women’s Building on the former site of HMP Holloway as a case study. \nWorkshop 3: Isn’t That Risky? \nRebecca Friel (Odd Arts) will outline how her arts organisation responded to the crisis and how it shifted their understanding of risk. She will explore emotional versus rational decision making when making professional decisions and how we must all embrace risk in the future. \nWorkshop 4: Who has the power? Do we truly co-create in secure settings and how can we do it better? \nWendy Smithers (It’s Not Your Birthday But…) will be having an open conversation about what co-creation looks like in secure settings and how arts organisations working within the criminal justice system can better place the communities they serve at the heart of power. \n\n\n\n\nCosts\n\n\n\nFree \n\n\nProgramme\n\n\n\n\n10:00 – 12:00\nWelcome & Introductions\nNCJAA Co-Chair Anna Hermann (Clean Break)\n\n\nNCJAA Co-Chair Simon Ruding (Theatres in Prisons & Probation Centre)\n\n\nKeynote Speakers\nEsther Thompson (One Small Thing) & Jennifer Walmsley (BearFace Theatre)\n\n\nBecoming Trauma-Informed – why is it important and how do we achieve it?\n\n\nPanel Discussion & Q&A\nRalph Lubkowski (Governor HMP Hewell) & Erika Flowers (Koestler award winning artist)\n\n\nBuilding Back Better in secure settings; Freelancer Advice; Fairer Employment Opportunities\n\n\n12:00 – 13:00\nBreak\n\n\n\n13:00 – 14:00\nFirst Workshops\nXavier Fiddes (In Focus Education & Development) – how can we better use technology?\n\n\nNiki Gibbs (Artist and NCJAA member) – how do we bring arts into the public domain?\n\n\n 14:00 – 14:30\nBreak\n\n\n\n14:30 – 16:00\nSecond Workshops\nRebecca Friel (Odd Arts) – how do we now think about risk when making decisions?\n\n\nWendy Smithers (It’s Not Your Birthday But…) – power and how to co-create in art organisations?\n\n\n\n\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_separator][vc_column_text] \nImage Credit: Elijah Thompson \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
