DESCRIPTION:5th – 8th\, 12th – 15th February\n7.30pm\nStoke-on-Trent\n£10 \nRideout’s new show\, In Plain Sight\, is an interactive improvised promenade performance taking place in a former tyre garage in Stoke-on-Trent in partnership with B arts. \nCommissioned by Voices of Stoke-on-Trent\, the show uses performance\, storytelling\, song\, interactive debate\, and food\, to explore the experiences of those who find themselves sleeping rough\, and tackle some of the issues that contribute to homelessness. \nDeveloped in consultation with people with lived experience of complex life circumstances\, In Plain Sight makes a special focus on why the help offered by professionals is sometimes rejected\, and offers insight into strategies that might enable more meaningful connections between those who sleep rough and those who seek to provide help and support. \nThe show contains stories that some people may find upsetting\, and is not considered suitable for those under 16. SUMMARY:Arts in criminal justice media training - with the Prison Radio Association
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday 27th November 2019\nBirmingham\nFrom £75 \nA one-day training course on how to positively navigate conversations with the media about work in arts and the criminal justice system. \nThis course aims to support and prepare our network so that they can appropriately deal with media enquiries and promote their work with confidence and expertise\, across media and social media platforms. \nThe Prison Radio Association is a prison-based charity that produces and delivers National Prison Radio (which airs in more than 100 prisons). It also runs PRA Productions – an independent production company whose profits support the charity. \nPRA Productions has produced dozens of programmes for the BBC. Some focus on criminal justice\, others stretch way beyond this niche. The success of PRA Productions was recognised by the industry when it was named Independent Production Company of the Year at the 2017 Audio Production Awards. Government departments and charities including the National Literacy Trust\, Booker Prize Foundation\, Samaritans\, National Careers Service and Prison Reform Trust\, are some of its clients. \nThe training includes information\, exercises and discussions on: \n\nHow the media works\nWhat journalists want\nMaking media contacts\nInterviews types – good and bad practice\nPreparation for interviews\nHaving a social media presence\nMock media interviews with feedback.\n\nThis course will be delivered by three members of the Prison Radio Association (PRA): Phil Maguire OBE – the founding Chief Executive of the PRA\, Andrew Wilkie – the PRA’s Director of Radio and Jo Meek who is the PRA’s Digital Director. \nTea and coffee\, and lunch will be provided.  Spaces are very limited and are offered on a first come\, first served basis. DESCRIPTION:7th November – 10th November 2019\nDeptford Does Art Gallery\, London\nFree \nDance Club at Scrubs is an exhibition celebrating the first edition of Dance Club\, a dance and choreography course run at HMP Wormwood Scrubs. \n\nSupported by Arts Council England and Barnet\, Enfield & Haringey NHS Mental Health Trust\, Dance Club endeavours to create a space for men in prison to improve communication skills\, express themselves creatively and challenge negative masculine behaviours prevalent in prisons. Over eight weeks Helena Webb and co-facilitator Marc Stevenson have danced with a group of men at Wormwood Scrubs accessing the mental health provision there. The group have danced energetically\, calmly\, sensitively and with abandon. They have recorded their dances through drawn scores and audio descriptions. \nThe work from Dance Club is exhibited alongside pieces by artist and National Criminal Justice Arts Alliance steering group member Erika Flowers\, who has lived experience of the criminal justice system. \nOn 10th November Erika will join other specialists in discussion on prison\, masculinity and dance as a rehabilitation tool. \n\n\nFind out more and book here\n\nImage courtesy of Helena Webb

DESCRIPTION:29th October – 3rd November 2019\nTate Exchange\, Tate Liverpool\nFree \nMen taking part in the Novus Family Learning programmes have worked with artist Denise Wright to explore different artistic techniques and processes inspired by Keith Haring. \nIn Tate Exchange\, Novus presents a series of artworks produced by men and their families from five prisons across the North West and North Wales. The work includes banners\, printmaking and drawing. During the week visitors to Tate Exchange can meet members of staff from Novus and take part in a practical activities. \nSocial enterprise Novus delivers education\, training and employment opportunities to men\, women and young people in over 50 UK prisons. Beyond Walls is the third project that has been displayed in Tate Exchange and is a part of an ongoing partnership between Novus and Tate Liverpool. The partnership gives families the opportunity to experience and be inspired by art. The aim is to reduce the impact of separation and isolation that families often face\, especially younger family members when they have a parent in prison. \n\nFind out more\n\n

SUMMARY:François Matarasso: A space to think
DESCRIPTION:Anne Peaker lecture 2019\nTuesday 15th October 2019\n6:30 – 9pm\nLondon\n£10 \nBook here\nAnne Peaker was a pioneer of arts for\, and by\, people in the criminal justice system. Our annual lecture honours her work and legacy\, which forms the basis of the National Criminal Justice Arts Alliance today. \nThis year\, keynote speaker François Matarasso will consider the historical context of participatory arts in criminal justice settings and Anne Peaker’s contribution to this. He will go on to consider art’s capacity for the kind of reflection that helps individuals grow\, and make the case for its importance in terms of human rights and power. \nThe event will include spoken word performances from Lady Unchained and Jason Smith\, and an exhibition of a photography project at HMP Whitemoor. \nFrançois’ lecture will be followed by a Q&A and networking drinks from 8-9pm. \n\nAbout the speaker:\nFrançois Matarasso is a community artist whose work embraces creative projects\, research and writing. His latest book A Restless Art: How participation won\, and why it matters (2019) gives an extensive account of the theory\, history and practice of community art in Europe and combines decades of first-hand experience with new research and many project descriptions. DESCRIPTION:6th – 7th October 2019\nCamden People’s Theatre\, London\nPay what you can \nPresented by Tale Be Told Theatre\, On Hold is a take on the housing crisis from the viewpoint of families living in temporary accommodation. \nBrought to Camden People’s Theatre as part of the One Festival of Homeless Arts\, and performed in the round\, the show combines personal accounts from the cast with verbatim testimony from families living in temporary accommodation. \nThese are broken up by moments of clowning and surrealism\, echoing the hoops families must go through as they have their lives put ‘on hold’. \nThis darkly comic play aims to lift the lid on what it means not to have a home to call your own and reveal the human truth behind the statistics of the housing crisis. \n\nBook here\n\nImage courtesy of Tale Be Told Theatre

I see you like me when I turned 18 – unfiltered – ready to conquer the world head held high – heart strong – I see you growing everyday.” \nAn Alternative Life\nThe play is the third commission from Futures Theatre’s creative engagement project An Alternative Life 2015 – 2017. \nDuring 2017\, the theatre worked in partnership with The Beth Centre in Lambeth\, London\, with women who all have lived experience of the criminal justice system.
