SUMMARY:Art of the Matter
DESCRIPTION:If family relationships are the golden thread to supporting children affected by parental imprisonment\, what role can the arts play in this?\nFor 2025 Clinks Family Network and the National Criminal Justice Arts Alliance (NCJAA) Anne Peaker Lecture are joining forces to bring you an in person event. \nClinks launched its family network in 2023 and has worked to bring the voluntary sector together to influence policy and practice. The network have highlighted the need for more funding for family work; consistent approaches to visits and the impact stigma has. This event will spotlight how organisations offer a creative approach to supporting children and families affected by the criminal justice system. It aims to bring together voluntary organisations\, art practitioners\, researchers\, and stakeholders to listen to and discuss how the arts have been used as a vital tool to support families. \nThis event will celebrate the work of the voluntary sector working to support children and families of those in the criminal justice system by creating opportunities to share learning and good practice\, network and consider future opportunities. \nThis event has been coproduced with All Things Considered Theatre who will be showcasing their fantastic performance\, ‘8 Hours There and Back’\, following the stories of Ruby\, Jake and Grace as they navigate a world that they shouldn’t be in and a system that has forgotten about them. Told through a fusion of dance\, projections\, and words ‘8 Hours There and Back’ examines how a system set up by adults is failing the children. This piece is inspired by the stories from children. Every story belongs to someone. \nAnne Peaker was a pioneer of arts for\, and by\, people in the criminal justice system. This event honours her work and legacy\, which forms the basis of the work NCJAA do today. \nFind our more and book your tickets here\n

SUMMARY:Cross-cultural arts practice with young people
DESCRIPTION:The National Criminal Justice Arts Alliance (NCJAA) are working alongside Clinks Area Development Officer for the North to bring you an exciting event to bring together organisations working\, or with an interest in\, working with young people in criminal justice through the arts or other ways. \nThe NCJAA arts and criminal justice forums are typically online events themed around important ideas and relevant developments in criminal justice. We’re excited to meet in person this September and gather as a network around the theme of working creatively with young people in a criminal justice context. \nYou’ll have the chance to hear from expert speakers in both practice and research\, meet others working in the field\, and share good practice within the network. It will create a space to step away from the day job and provide an opportunity to share good practice\, strengthen partnership working\, and discuss any opportunities or challenges your organisation may be currently facing. \nThis event is co-delivered in partnership with Northumbria University who will be sharing their latest findings following the publication of The stolen generations case study via the NCJAA website last year. \nWe ae delighted to announce that Northumbria Police and Crime Commissioner\, Kim McGuiness will provide the key note address.  \nFind out more

This event will be packed full of insightful sessions relating to the conference theme of What does building back better look like for the arts in criminal justice? \n\n\n\nThe last two years have been difficult for those working in the arts in criminal justice. But this hard time has also highlighted the extraordinary adaptability of creative individuals and organisations who have continued to support and inspire people in the criminal justice system\, while responding to the pandemic and far reaching changes in criminal justice policy. \nAs we emerge from the pandemic and arts organisations move from survival to recovery mode\, there is a critical need to learn from our experiences and share successful approaches to the ‘new normal’ that 2022 and beyond will bring. \nWith a day of keynote speakers\, panel discussions and workshops\, the National Criminal Justice Arts Alliance (NCJAA) welcomes everyone to attend and learn about how we can all best move forward together. \n  \nConference Agenda \nNCJAA Co-Chairs Anna Herrmann\, (Clean Break)\, and Simon Ruding\, (TiPP)\, will give an opening address before keynote speeches from Esther Thompson (One Small Thing) and Jennifer Walmsley (BearFace Theatre) on the importance of organisations embedding trauma-informed practices in their ways of working. \nA panel discussion will focus on what building back better looks like from a range of different settings. Ralph Lubkowski\, (Governor of HMP Hewell)\, will share his views on what best practice for arts provisions could be within prisons and Erika Flowers (Koestler award winning artist)\, will discuss fairer employment opportunities for freelancers with lived experience and independent artists working in the criminal justice system \nAttendees are invited to join afternoon workshops facilitated by specialists who have developed better ways of working during the pandemic. This year\, workshops will be led by In Focus Education and Development\, Odd Arts\, It’s Not Your Birthday But…\, and Niki Gibbs. \n  \nWorkshops \nThere are four workshops being delivered at our conference\, with attendees able to select which two they would like to participate in when registering for the event: \nWorkshop 1: Online Delivery of the Bronze Arts Awards \nXavier Fiddes (In Focus Education and Development) will discuss how his creative organisation used technology to successfully deliver services during the pandemic; and how it can be used to support creative discovery with groups such as young people in the criminal justice system. \nWorkshop 2: Bringing Arts in Criminal Justice to a Wider Public Audience \nNiki Gibbs (artist and NCJAA member) will explore ways we can bring arts within criminal justice into the public domain\, using the Women’s Building on the former site of HMP Holloway as a case study. \nWorkshop 3: Isn’t That Risky? \nRebecca Friel (Odd Arts) will outline how her arts organisation responded to the crisis and how it shifted their understanding of risk. She will explore emotional versus rational decision making when making professional decisions and how we must all embrace risk in the future. \nWorkshop 4: Who has the power? Do we truly co-create in secure settings and how can we do it better? \nWendy Smithers (It’s Not Your Birthday But…) will be having an open conversation about what co-creation looks like in secure settings and how arts organisations working within the criminal justice system can better place the communities they serve at the heart of power. \n\n\n\n\nCosts\n\n\n\nFree \n\n\nProgramme\n\n\n\n\n10:00 – 12:00\nWelcome & Introductions\nNCJAA Co-Chair Anna Hermann (Clean Break)\n\n\nNCJAA Co-Chair Simon Ruding (Theatres in Prisons & Probation Centre)\n\n\nKeynote Speakers\nEsther Thompson (One Small Thing) & Jennifer Walmsley (BearFace Theatre)\n\n\nBecoming Trauma-Informed – why is it important and how do we achieve it?\n\n\nPanel Discussion & Q&A\nRalph Lubkowski (Governor HMP Hewell) & Erika Flowers (Koestler award winning artist)\n\n\nBuilding Back Better in secure settings; Freelancer Advice; Fairer Employment Opportunities\n\n\n12:00 – 13:00\nBreak\n\n\n\n13:00 – 14:00\nFirst Workshops\nXavier Fiddes (In Focus Education & Development) – how can we better use technology?\n\n\nNiki Gibbs (Artist and NCJAA member) – how do we bring arts into the public domain?\n\n\n 14:00 – 14:30\nBreak\n\n\n\n14:30 – 16:00\nSecond Workshops\nRebecca Friel (Odd Arts) – how do we now think about risk when making decisions?\n\n\nWendy Smithers (It’s Not Your Birthday But…) – power and how to co-create in art organisations?\n\n\n\n\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_separator][vc_column_text] \nImage Credit: Elijah Thompson \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

I think they are things. I think they get on the walls\, they get in your wallpaper\, they get in your rugs\, in your upholstery\, in your clothes. And\, finally\, into you.” – Maya Angelou \nThe National Criminal Justice Arts Alliance is excited to invite you to our annual Anne Peaker lecture. \nJoining us in conversation will be Ashleigh Nugent\, award winning author of LOCKS and Creative Director of Rise Up CIC; Lady Unchained\, award winning broadcaster at Audio Production Awards 2021 and Creative Director of Unchained Poetry; and Akemia Minott\, youth worker\, activist and Managing Director of 84 YOUTH. \nThis year\, our guests will be exploring the power of words; their power to move us\, define us\, build us up and tear us down\, but most importantly\, their ability to heal and to effect positive change. \nAnne Peaker was a pioneer of arts for\, and by\, people in the criminal justice system.  Our annual lecture honours her work and legacy\, which forms the basis of the work we do today. \nThe event will also include performances and an audience Q&A. \nFull programme details to follow.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text] \nThe best virtual event I have attended – so engaging. The incredible co-creation element and putting lived experience at the heart of what you do. It’s just fantastic\, and I feel really privileged to have been here today. I don’t want it to end!  – Anne Peaker 2020 attendee \n[/vc_column_text][vc_separator][vc_column_text] \nImage credit: Elijah Thompson \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Where practitioners have gained access\, they are increasingly faced with additional challenges that impact their work. \nAt the forum\, we will be joined by Good Vibrations Executive Director Katy Haigh and Only Connect CEO Simon Pellew sharing how they have approached issues of access to deliver projects in prisons during the Covid-19 pandemic. Also joining us will be Clean Break’s Joint Artistic Director\, Anna Herrmann and Geese Theatre Company’s Artistic Director/CEO Andy Watson to lead discussion on some of the wider access and safeguarding issues practitioners are faced with. \nThere will also be opportunity for discussion – in particular\, we’d like to hear your experiences around prison access to inform our policy influencing work and help us advocate on your behalf. \nThe arts and criminal justice network forum is a space for network-led discussion\, and we welcome all arts-based organisations\, freelancers and prison-based practitioners currently working in the criminal justice system. \nThe NCJAA will chair the conversation\, but please note that this will be a network-led discussion. We particularly welcome arts in criminal justice freelancers\, practitioners and anyone else seeking to connect with others in the sector to give and gain support. \nPlease register if you would like to attend. After registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing all information required to join the meeting\, including a password. \nWe’re committed to making everything we do accessible to everyone. If you have any accessibility needs please let us know when you book and we’ll do our best to meet them. \nIf you have any questions about the meetings\, please email info@artsincriminaljustice.org.uk. If you experience any issues with booking\, please contact events@clinks.org.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

He will go on to consider art’s capacity for the kind of reflection that helps individuals grow\, and make the case for its importance in terms of human rights and power. \nThe event will include spoken word performances from Lady Unchained and Jason Smith\, and an exhibition of a photography project at HMP Whitemoor. \nFrançois’ lecture will be followed by a Q&A and networking drinks from 8-9pm. \n\nAbout the speaker:\nFrançois Matarasso is a community artist whose work embraces creative projects\, research and writing. His latest book A Restless Art: How participation won\, and why it matters (2019) gives an extensive account of the theory\, history and practice of community art in Europe and combines decades of first-hand experience with new research and many project descriptions. François lives in Britain and has experience of work in many European countries. \n\nImage courtesy of François Matarasso

SUMMARY:Young people in the criminal justice system - how can the arts respond?
DESCRIPTION:Annual conference: 27th February 2019\n9.30am – 4pm\nThe Crescent Theatre\, Birmingham\n£90 (£70 for Clinks members). \n\n\nOnline bookings for this event are now closed. If you are still interested in attending\, please contact events@clinks.org to be added to the waiting list. \n\nThe National Criminal Justice Arts Alliance (NCJAA) 2019 annual conference asks the question: How can the arts respond to the issues facing young people in the criminal justice system? \nThe conference aims to answer this question with workshops\, performances\, panel discussions and speeches from leading professionals and young people who have been in contact with the criminal justice system. \nIntermission Youth Theatre will be performing Verona Road\, the company’s adaptation of Romeo and Juliet. Speakers include: \n\n(Video message) input from Edward Argar MP\, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Ministry of Justice\nAbid Hussain\, Director of Diversity\, Arts Council England\nNathan Dennis\, Director\, First Class Legacy\nMatt Griffiths\, CEO\, Youth Music\nNeal Hazel\, Youth Justice Board\nLynnette Kelly\, West Midlands Assistant Police and Crime Commissioner\nJamal Khan\, Waltham Forest Council Young Advisor and author\nCraig Pinkey\, Criminologist and urban youth specialist\nLisa Rowles\, Director of Innovation and Evidence\, Khulisa\nSandwell Youth Offending Team\nUnitas\nDr Daniela Varley\, Director\, Recre8\nand more to be announced.\n\nIn the youth justice system\, nearly half of all children (under 18 years) are from black\, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds with increasing numbers of Muslims and the starkest disproportionality amongst Gypsy\, Traveller and Roma children. In the adult estate\, the distinct characteristics and needs of young adults (18–25 years) are unaddressed\, resulting in disproportionate reoffending rates. \nWe know from evidence that the arts have the power to transform lives\, reduce crime\, challenge stereotypes and enhance art and culture for all. So\, how can the sector help to support children and young people up to the age of 25 in contact with the criminal justice system? \nThe conference will discuss good practice and policy\, at both local and national levels\, where arts and culture aim to address: poor outcomes for young black\, Asian and minority ethnic people in custody; Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs); health and wellbeing; leadership and role models. We will also explore effective partnership work\, funding\, and how evidence is used to make change. \nNCJAA invites policy-makers\, voluntary organisations\, prison staff\, practitioners\, academics and artists working with the arts and young people in the youth/criminal justice system to attend and be a part of this important discussion. \n\nWe are offering 10 free places to those with a lived experience of the criminal justice system\, or for who cost is a barrier to attending. Places will be given confidentially and on a first come first served basis. If you would like to apply please email info@artsincriminaljustice.org.uk
